In a first-of-its-kind case in Egypt, a woman has moved the courts seeking divorce from her husband on political grounds.
According to Masrawy website, the 26-year-old woman is an ardent supporter of former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik while her interior designer husband supports the Muslim Brotherhood.
She alleged that the husband evades work and spends his own money making advertisement posters for the party and rallies behind Mohammed Morsi.
She confronted him and asked him to stop splurging on party issues, but he paid no heed. Later, when he learnt that she would vote for Ahmed Shafiq, he lost his cool and beat her up.
The woman, inturn demanded a divorce, but he declined. And thus, she moved the courts.
The couple has been married a little over an year.
The court adjourned the case until June 17.
