Ten family members of death row convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman met him at the Dhaka Central Jail this morning.
The Bangla daily Prothom Alo quoted his son Hasan Iqbal, as saying that his father was doing well and was of strong will.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader, who was shifted to Dhaka from Kashimpur jail in Gazipur yesterday, met his family members for about 30-minutes with the permission of the jail authorities.
Kamaruzzaman’s wife Nurunnahar, sons Hasan Iqbal, Ahmed Hasan, Ikram Hasan and Hasan Imam, daughter Afia Nur, brothers Naziruzzaman and Abdullah Al Mahadi, sister Mohsina Begum, and nephew Abdul Alim, are among the family members who visited him at the jail.
Shishir Monir, a counsel for the convicted war criminal, told the daily that “The jail authorities did not call us. The family met him as part of the regular meeting”.
Asked about Kamaruzzaman’s health conditions, the counsel said Kamaruzaman is in good health.
He further told the reporters that they will file a review petition within 30 days after receiving the full text of the Supreme Court verdict.
The Supreme Court had on Monday upheld the death penalty for him as a war crimes tribunal awarded him the capital punishment a year and a half ago.
The Jamaat leader was a key organiser of the infamous Al-Badr Bahini responsible for abducting, torturing and killing freedom fighters, intellectuals and pro-liberation people in 1971.
