Falling popularity forces Jindal to scrap controversial zero-tax plan in Louisiana

Washington, Apr. 9 (ANI): Indian-origin Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has announced he is scrapping his controversial plan to eliminate the state’s income tax.

In a speech to open the state legislative session, Jindal told Louisiana lawmakers that he’s listening to the criticism of his plan and acting accordingly.

According to Politico, Jindal’s plan called for an increase in the state sales tax to make up for revenue lost by eliminating the income tax.

The plan has been criticized by state legislators and from business executives who argued that the plan would hurt their companies the most.

Jindal’s critics within Louisiana have said that his policy proposals, including his tax plan, are aimed more at impressing a national audience than at solving problems at home.

Still, Jindal did not concede defeat, calling on the legislature to propose other ways to scrap the income tax.

Jindal’s move comes after a poll conducted last week showed his popularity sagging among Louisianan’s, as people became more frustrated with his plans.

The Southern Media and Opinion Research survey analysis found that President Barack Obama did not exactly earn the love of the majority of the voters, he still came out with a 43 percent job approval rating, putting him five percentage points ahead of Jindal. (ANI)
