Facilitate registration of cycle rickshaws: Delhi HC

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the civic body of north Delhi to hold camps in the Chandni Chowk area to facilitate registration of cycle rickshaws and licensing of rickshaw pullers operating in the area.

A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Ashutosh Kumar also suggested that authorities should use computerisation system such as bar coding each rickshaw and a digital log of registered rickshaw pullers.

The court also asked the Centre to file an affidavit explaining why it had transferred two police officers, appointed by court orders as nodal officials in connection with redevelopment of Chandni Chowk, without prior permission of the court.

It also asked the Delhi government to request a former Chief Secretary of Delhi to take up the assignment of heading the meeting of all the nodal officers from various agencies.

The court was hearing a petition filed in public interest by the Manushi Sangathan NGO and others in 2007 on the issue of redevelopment of the walled city and creation of lanes for non-motorised vehicles.
