Gadchiroli: A woman Special Police Officer (SPO), who was last week assaulted by the wife of a colleague, a Constable, has died, officials said today.
Jija Bandu Hedo, who was admitted to a hospital after the assault on December 1, died the same day, but the incident came to light today.
Though a case of accidental death was registered with Gadchiroli Police Station, a Police Constable, who was said to be close to Jija, has been taken into custody for questioning, Kishor Mirge, who is investigating the case, said.
The Constable, identified only as Timma, was attached with Aheri Police.
According to sources, Jija, a resident of village Ghotsur in Etapalli taluka, was appointed SPO in 2010 and deputed to police headquarters here as she had received threats from Naxals. Since then, she had been living in the police colony.
In the meantime, Jija got acquainted with Timma, who worked as a driver. He used to come to the residence of Jija frequently, they said.
When Jija’s mother objected to his frequent visits, Timma told her he will soon marry her daughter. However, when Jija came to know that Timma was already married, she avoided meeting him, the sources said.
When the wife of Timma came to know her husband often went to meet Jija, she came to Jija’s residence on November 30 and quarrelled with her.
Next day also she went to Jija’s home and beat her severely following which she fell unconscious. Jija was admitted to the General Hospital, where she died during treatment, they said.
The residence of Jija was checked today and the police found some materials, including uniform, SIM cards, memory cards and clothes belonging to Timma, who was taken into custody for interrogation, Mirge said.
