Mumbai, June 25: A special MCOCA court today convicted six members of Chhota Rajan gang in an extortion case and sentenced them to five years imprisonment while acquitting five others, including dreaded gangster D K Rao.
Of the 11 accused in the case, Special Judge R G Awachat convicted six for extortion and conspiracy under IPC, while the rest were let-off for lack of evidence.
All the accused were, however, acquitted under the stringent provisions of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) after the court observed the prosecution had failed to prove that they were part of an organised crime syndicate.
Those found guilty are: Vicky Malhotra, John D’Souza, Dharmesh Shah, Bhashkar Bhandary, Anil Barot and Jitendra Tiwari (all members of the Rajan gang). They were sentenced to five-year imprisonment that they have already undergone since their arrest in 2005.
