Explosion at Beijing restaurant: state media

Beijing, September 25: An explosion rocked a restaurant in downtown Beijing early Friday, leaving some people injured, police and the state Xinhua news agency reported, citing witnesses.

A policewoman in the Xinjiekou area of the Chinese capital told AFP that the initial investigation indicated the blast was accidental. She said she did not yet know whether anyone had been injured.

Xinhua, quoting a witness surnamed Qiao, said the restaurant had collapsed following the explosion, “burying some people in the debris”. The report said some people were injured, without giving a specific number.

The Xinjiekou area is located northwest of Tiananmen Square. Security has been ramped up across the capital ahead of October 1 celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of communist China.
