Expectations on ESL Narasimhan confirmed?

Hyderabad, January 17: The Centre’s reported decision to confirm ESL Narasimham as Governor of Andhra Pradesh has come on expected lines.

Though the Chhattisgarh Governor was initially given additional charge of the State following the ignominious exit of ND Tiwari, New Delhi apparently felt he was the right man for AP given the current volatile political situation. A former police officer who means business, the governor has made it amply clear that any threat to law and order would not be viewed leniently.

At the same time, he has patiently heard out views of a cross-section of the people presenting both bifurcationist and status quoist views. Given that the political parties and even ministers are divided on regional lines, New Delhi

would more than look forward to an independent view from the Raj Bhavan on the complex issue.

Also, as someone who had worked in the State in the early part of his career, can speak the local language and has local contacts, Narasimham is better-placed to elicit opinions.

The role of the governor becomes all the more important in the event of the Centre being forced to exercise the option of President’s Rule if Telangana legislators carry forward their threat to resign.
