Exodus of UP Bihar labourers hits the industry in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: As the hate crimes targeting Hindi-speaking people have now spread to central parts of the state. Labourers from northern states like UP, Bihar employed in Gujarat are leaving for their home states in large numbers. According to reports over 12000 labourers have fled from Gujarat for their home states. Over 100 migrants fled for their lives in Ahmedabad after a go down was set afire on Sunday.

Industrial units are badly hit by the exodus of migrant workers as they were largely dependent on labourers from outside Gujarat. With the festive season around the corner, industries suffered production losses of 20%. Large industrial hubs have however remained unaffected.

The hate crimes began in Gujarat against Hindi speaking people after the rape of a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha district. Around 56 cases of attacks on migrants have been registered across Gujarat and 431 people were arrested.
