Excise official’s assets worth Rs1 crore: CBI

Mumbai, November 17: Additional commissioner of customs VK Agarwal possibly used a front to invest his ill-gotten money, the CBI claimed in special CBI court on Monday.

Agarwal’s estimated assets are nearly worth Rs1 crore, a CBI officer said. Agarwal and his wife Prameela, a head clerk with the Central Railway, were arrested for having assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. They were remanded in judicial custody on Monday.

Seeking CBI custody, special public prosecutor AA Ansari argued that during his custodial interrogation Agarwal had claimed that one DD Gupta had given his wife Rs44 lakh cash to purchase a flat at Versova in 1994. Gupta expired in 2005.

Gupta, however, worked under Agarwal in the New Customs House at that time. The CBI is seeking Agarwal’s custody to find out how many favours he had done for Gupta during his stint there, the official said.

Ansari also argued that Agarwal had made a false statement about Gupta gifting them a flat. Earlier he had said that Gupta was his uncle but he later retracted saying that he was a close friend since 1993, claimed another officer

Agarwal had been charged with corruption in 2006.
