Exchange of fire between police and Maoists, no casualty reported

Lalgarh, July 15: The anti-naxal operation launched by the combined security forces in the three districts of Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura districts remained suspended today following incessant rains since this morning.

Police informed that Maoist ultras had resorted to firing at the camp of the combined security forces at Ramgarh from the nearby Bamal forest area to which the latter retaliated. There was no report of any casualty on the side of the security personnel.

Meanwhile, Maoist leader Bikash, in a statement issued today, claimed responsibility for killing two CPI(M) activists, whose bodies were recovered yesterday from under a culvert near a canal in Memul village under Salboni police station.

He said the CPI(M) workers were killed as they were police informers.

The Maoists had entered Madhupur village and kidnapped the activists – Swapan Singha Deb and Tarini Mahato – from their house the previous night.
