Exams only when state is peaceful: Sabitha

Hyderabad, November 21: Home minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy today declared that the written test for recruitment of sub-inspectors of police will be conducted only after ensuring peace in the State. She defended the State government’s decision to postpone the examination stating that the government acted responsibly and took the decision respecting the sentiments of people in the Telangana region.

At a press conference here today, Sabitha Reddy said the examinations had been postponed considering the apprehensions being expressed by OU students and various political parties in Telangana region. “Being a responsible government, we took the decision to avoid further disturbances. We do not want to hurt people’s sentiments. We appeal to students to maintain restraint and think over the issue before resorting to any extreme steps,” she said. The home minister offered to clear all doubts being raised by people from various quarters on the recruitment process.

Due the decision, nearly 18,000 candidates who had cleared various stages in the recruitment process and had been preparing hard for the written exam had to wait for many more months for a job, she lamented. That 18,000 candidates were competing for 1,200 SI posts reflected the severity of unemployment in the State, she said and urged people to understand that recruitment of police personnel was essential to maintain law and order and also for smooth functioning of the administrative mechanism.

Reacting to the statements of various political parties on the government’s inaction in resolving the issue, the home minister said the government had to act responsibly and there were no prestige issues involved.

She said Hyderabad city remained to be part of Zone-VI as per the 2008 notification for recruitment of SIs. Chief minster K Rosaiah had taken up the issue with Union home minister P Chidambaram and urged him to expedite the process for deleting clause 14(f) from the Presidential Order. Further, the State government was also appointing a special officer in New Delhi to pursue the issue with the Centre.
