New Delhi, March 16: The Supreme Court today asked the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to consider whether any further probe was required against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 52 others in a complaint filed by Zakia Jafri, the widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was killed in the Gulberg Society massacre of February 2002.
A Bench headed by Justice D K Jain and including Justices P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam made the observation after the court-appointed amicus curiae, senior counsel Raju Ramachandran, raised some concerns over the SIT’s report in the case.
As it considered the amicus curiae’s note and the report of the SIT, the Bench observed that “the SIT inferences and evidence do not match its findings”.
The Bench asked the SIT, headed by former CBI chief R K Raghavan, to examine the observations submitted by Ramachandran, decide whether further investigations were required, and file a report by April 25.
The court also agreed to list the interim application moved by the Gujarat government seeking a recall of the court’s earlier order directing the SIT to look into the complaint against Modi and 52 others.
