Indian’s fifth President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s family members who hail from Assam have failed to find their place in the latest NRC (National Register of Citizens) draft.
The nephew of the former president who hails from Rangia in Kampur district, Jiauddin Ali Ahmed (52), along with his wife and two children could not find their names in the NRC draft. He said the required documents to establish his relationship with Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed were washed away in the 2000 flood.
“I could not trace the legacy data of my grandfather (Fakhruddin’s father) Zalnur Ali, who served as a Colonel in the British army. As a result, I could not establish my lineage, when we tried to search through the NRC database for the legacy certificate, we could not find our grandfather’s name. He was a resident of Jorhat. This means the (former) President’s family also could not establish the link since he was my father’s brother. “Said Jiauddin.
Though he, his wife and his eldest son have voter IDs. However, but the documents required for the NRC update process is to establish their ancestry to prove their citizenship.
We were misled by some people that since we are the family members of the former president it will not be a problem for us to make it into the NRC list. He said other members of his family have all moved to Delhi or other places across India and hardly visit Assam.
