Ex-Interpol chief accepted bribes, claims China

Beijing: China has accused former chief of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) Meng Hongwei, who has been detained in the country, of accepting bribes.

The allegations came after an urgent midnight Communist Party committee meeting was convened, wherein Chinese officials expressed “unanimous support” for the probe against Meng and pledged “absolute political loyalty” to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the party’s top brass, South China Morning Post reported.

As per a statement issued by the Ministry of Public Security, a task force will be constituted to question Meng’s associates. It further noted that Meng’s insistence on “doing things in his own way means he has only himself to blame for being placed under investigation”.

The Ministry also stated that there was no scope for any “negotiation or bargaining with the party.”
The Interpol on Sunday received the resignation of Hongwei, who was missing since over a week.

A statement from Interpol confirmed that as per the agency’s constitution and internal regulations, the Senior Vice-President of Interpol’s Executive Committee, Kim Jong Yang of South Korea, becomes the acting president.

The General Assembly Session, to be held in Dubai from November 18 to 21 will elect a new president for the remaining two years of the president’s term.

Meng was elected as the Interpol Chief in November 2016, becoming the first Chinese official to hold the position.
