Hyderabad, August 24: The former Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad and additional DGP (Law and order), Mr G. Gurunatha Rao, IPS (Retd), passed away in the early hours of Sunday.
He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
Mr Gutunatha Rao held many important positions like Commissioner of City Police, Additional DG (L&O), very first Superintendent of Police of the vigilance cell and so on.
In the last mentioned post, he is still remembered for his work in what has come to be known as the Bitragunta Rice Case. He was known to be a tough and upright officer. He was erudite and a great orator.
Mr Gurunatha Rao was ailing for the last two weeks and was in the surgical ICU of the Apollo Hospital. He and Mr K. Vijayarama Rao, former director of the CBI and former minister were classmates from their Intermediate days in Chennai and batch mates in the IPS as well.
