Washington, February 22: The current insufficient pension system has raised poverty among senior citizens in the EU member states, forcing them to work hard to make a decent living.
EU pensioners say the social system does not really pay off anymore, and that they have to call on the government to introduce a common single pension for everybody, a Media correspondent reported.
“In my age, the chances are zero. When you are over sixty, no one would hire you,” a pensioner complained.
Experts believe the social system has to change and adapt to the varying needs of the citizens.
However, they claim the change is a slow and painful process as it would take at least 10 years to affect, leaving no chance for current senior citizens but to work.
“After working all their life, having to work after pension as well, is the sad reality for more and more pensioners in Europe,” said Birgit Meinhard-Schiebe from the European Network Green Seniors.
“The system cannot support them adequately anymore, simply because in Europe pensioners outnumber significantly those who go to work and pay social insurance,” she added.
