New York, July 10: European Union External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said Thursday that sanctions should be considered if Iran rejects talks to settle the dispute over results of last month’s presidential elections.
“If nothing will happen, the question of sanctions and strengthening of sanctions will come up again on the EU side,” Ferrero-Waldner told a group of reporters while visiting UN headquarters in New York.
She suggested that the international community remains united and would consider sanctions “if we want to show to Iran that it should not go beyond a certain limit.”
The opposition in Iran charged fraud in the presidential elections, in which incumbent President Ahmed Ahmadinejad was declared a landslide winner. Iran has been asked to respect freedom of expression and freedom of assembly as it cracked down on opponents to the regime protesting the purported outcome.
