Tehran, April 14: A university professor says the latest round of EU sanctions against Iran, under the pretext of human rights, is aimed at pressuring and isolating the nation.
“It is an attempt to keep pressure up on Iran. Because they are losing hold of the region and Iran is growing much stronger than before,” said Mohammad Marandi, who is a professor of North American Studies at Tehran University, in an interview with Media on Wednesday.
Marandi said the countries that the US used to exert pressure on Iran in the past, such as Egypt, are now moving away from the American camp and are aligning themselves with the Islamic Republic.
He questioned the credibility of the sanctions and said Western countries practice double-standards and use human rights as a tool to exert pressure on independent nations.
“These outrages in Yemen as well as in Bahrain make such statements and accusations by Western countries seem quite ridiculous. Western countries have no credibility when it comes to human rights,” the professor concluded.
On Tuesday, the European Union imposed a new round of sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans, against 32 Iranian officials over allegations of human rights abuse.
The measures were decided at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg. The names of these 32 individual have not been made public.
