Environment panel to document illegal mining in Goa

Panaji, April 04: Goa government’s sub-committee on environment has decided to compile illegal mining activities in the state in its vision document, which will be ready within two years.

Environmentalist Dr Madhav Gadgil, who heads up the sub-committee on Environment and Sustainable Development, told reporters here today that it will compile a directory of illegal mines in the state.

“Our stand is clear — the illegal mines should go. We are compiling directory of illegal mining activities in the state as a part of vision document,” he said.

Committee members include Dr Satish Shetye, Director of National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), and Ligia Noronha of The Energy Resources Institute (TERI).

The sub-committee is a part of Golden Jubilee Council formed by the Goa government.

Goa has 105 operational mines in the state, which extract around 45 million metric tones of iron ore that is exported.
