Engineering student succumbs to accidental burns

Hyderabad, February 03: An engineering student, who allegedly suffered burns due to suspected gas leakage couple of days back, succumbed today. Though police said she might have died of accidental burns, there were reports that the girl set herself ablaze as she could not get fee reimbursement from her college.

The girl, G Vara Lakshmi (17), was a resident of Lashkarguda under Hayathnagar police station limits. She was a B.Tech first year student of Vignan Engineering College on the outskirts of the city and daughter of Jangaiah, a businessman.

According to Hayathnagar inspector B Bhaskar, Vara Lakshmi turned on the gas stove to light it for preparing food on Jan 30 night. She, however, could not light the stove as the lighter was not functioning.

Without turning off the gas stove, Vara Lakshmi went in search of a match box and after a few minutes lit it with match stick.

As gas was leaking from the stove, it caught fire resulting in severe injuries to her. She was shifted to a hospital where she succumbed to burns today.

There were reports that the girl set herself ablaze as she could not get fee reimbursement. Police, however, said they did not have any such information.

“We recorded the girl’s statement on the day she suffered burns. She told us and even the magistrate that she suffered accidental burns,’’ Bhaskar said.

Police, however, said they would inquire into the reports. “We have not received any complaint from her parents that Lakshmi set herself ablaze,’’ he added.
