Engineering student ends life

Hyderabad, November 20: An engineering second year student committed suicide on Tuesday night after he was reportedly not allowed to sit for semester examinations due to shortage of attendance.

C Premjeet, 19, of Veerapalli in Rayachoti area of Kadapa district and son of a farmer Narasimhulu, committed suicide by hanging himself at a friend’s house in S R Nagar.

Premjeet, second year (ECE) student of Nova College of Engineering and Technology in Hayathnagar, earlier used to stay at a hostel, but he recently moved out to stay with his classmate Santosh’s family at SRT Colony in Sanatnagar.

The incident came to light at about 8 pm on Tuesday night when Santosh’s mother Kamala returned home. The door of the house was locked from inside and she grew suspicious after Premjeet, who was alone at home, did not open the door for a long time, Sanatnagar inspector A Balakoti said.

With the help of neighbours, the door was forced open and Premjeet was found hanging from the ceiling fan.

Police found a suicide note, purportedly written by Premjeet, in the house.

According to police, the suicide note, written in Telugu and English addressing his parents, said though he was studying hard he was not able to reach their expectations. “Perform sisters’ marriages. No one is responsible for my death,” the inspector quoting the note said. However, the student’s parents alleged that he committed suicide as the college administration did not allow him to take the semester examinations.

According to college chairman M Krishna Rao, a student needs 65 per cent attendance to be allowed to write examinations, but Premjeet had only 40 per cent attendance. Besides shortage of attendance, Premjeet failed in all the first year subjects. “We wanted him to clear the Ist year subjects. So, when his parents approached us to let him write I semester examinations of the IInd year, we said no to them,” the chairman said. He added that the parents had forced the boy to opt for engineering, while he was interested in the science stream. According to the Sanatnagar inspector, Premjeet did not mention anything about the college in the suicide note so no case would be filed against the management.

A suspicious death case was registered under section 174 of CrPC.
