Endorsing beef consumption: Chetana Thirthahalli threatened with rape and acid attacks

Chetana Thirthahalli a woman film-maker from Bengaluru has been threatened with rape and acid attack by fundamentalists for she endorses beef consumption.

Chetana who is a scriptwriter and also an associate director of Kannada movies lodged a complaint with the Bengaluru Police seeking action against those who are threatening her on social media.

Chetana received threats on Facebook after she had participated in a rally in Bengaluru endorsing beef consumption and questioning Hindu practices, which was attended by leading litterateurs and feminists. She had also written extensively on Hindu practices.

Her endorsement on beef consumption leads to a hatred debate, between her supporters and those opposing her views on social media platforms.

Several fundamentalist posted messages on her Facebook account threatening to rape her. A few threatened to throw acid on her face using fake social media accounts. Taking the threats seriously, Chetana has approached the police to seek justice.

According to Bengaluru Police, among many one is Madhusudan Gowda, who is a research scholar, who sent her messages threatening with dire consequences.

Actress-turned-politician Pooja Gandhi has extended support to the film-maker, saying eating is one’s own choice; none can have a control on it. She has urged the police to take a stern action against those who are threatening Chetana, as per the law.
