Union IT and Communications minister Killi Kruparani said that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme brought revolutionary changes in rural India. The minister held an interactive session with the field assistants of the scheme at Srikakulam on Saturday.
Addressing them, the union minister said it was they who had to take the scheme forward further. She said that the UPA government was in the forefront of efforts to give legal status to various welfare measures. She said the MRNREGS has not only improved the living condition of the people living below the poverty line, but also enhanced the purchasing power of the common people. She said while Rs.1,72,500 crore was spent on the scheme all over the country, in Andhra Pradesh alone Rs. 52,000 crore was spent.
She said in Srikakulam district from 2007 to this day Rs. 12,00 crore was spent, providing employment to 6 lakh fam9ilies. Collector Sourabh Gour, district water management scheme director Kalyana Chakravarti and others participated in the programme. (NSS)
