Emirati woman dies after she underwent surgery for obesity

The woman, 39, died after she underwent an operation to remove excess skin and fat, the Dubai Criminal Court heard on Thursday.

MH, the mother of six children, had chronic obesity problem and decided to go ahead with operation despite knowing the danger it involves.

According to the court record, the woman underwent a five-hour operation on June 8 2010 and complained severe chest pain and breathing problem after the operation.

She was rushed into the intensive care unit (ICU) but died the next day despite several attempts to resuscitate her, the record showed.

Two doctors – a Brazilian plastic surgeon and an Indian anesthetist doctor – have been charged for causing the death of the Emirati mother.

The Brazilian doctor pleaded not guilty while the Indian doctor claimed innocence and didn’t appear before the court on Thursday.

The anaesthetist doctor told the court that he had warned the surgeon not to proceed with the operation because of the serious risks involved in it. “I told him that only few doctors in the world can carry out this operation,” the anaesthetist doctor said, adding that surgeon insisted and went ahead with surgery.

However, the surgeon told the court that he had conducted a number of such surgeries previously.

The hearing was adjourned and the next date is yet to be determined
