Hyderabad: Electricity consumers of Telangana State are likely to receive a major shock of imposing fuel surcharge by the Govt. It is learnt from reliable sources that Govt. of Telangana has not taken any immediate decision for imposing fuel surcharge in view of the ongoing Assembly session but it has plans to impose it soon. It is quite likely that Electricity Regulatory Commission might issue a notification imposing the surcharge. It is reported that imposition of fuel surcharge has been necessitated to balance the difference between income and expenditure of current generation. It is binding on the Govt. to seek permission from Electricity Regulatory Commission before imposing the surcharge.
The sources indicated that Rs. 30207 crore are required for South and North Power Discounts but the present income is Rs. 21418 crore. It records a deficit of Rs. 8789 crore. According to the plan, the burden of Rs. 1158 crore would be shifted to electricity consumers. The balance of Rs. 6831 crore would be collected from State Govt. as subsidy. Planning is being made to get a subsidy of Rs. 4-5 thousand crore from the State Govt. and Rs. 2000 crore would be collected from the consumers as Surcharge for which there is a provision in the Electricity Act of 2003.
