Electric kettles still beat mobile phones in favourite gadgets poll

A new survey has revealed that the electric kettles have secured top spot in a poll of people’s favourite gadgets, beating the mobile phones into second place.

The survey found that seventy per cent of 2000 people from all over the UK said putting the kettle on for a cuppa was their top priority, while 48 per cent said they checked their phone for messages or emails, the Daily Express reported.

The kettle, which was first produced in 1893 by a firm called Crompton and Co and started to replace traditional stove-top devices towards the end of the 19th century, also topped the list of best kitchen appliances, with 23 per cent putting it in number one spot, followed by the washing machine with 18 per cent and fridge/freezer with 15 per cent.

Futurologist James Bellini said that it’s not surprising the kettle still reigns supreme because amid all the digital marvels of the 2020s household, from molecular cookers to waterless washing machines, the appeal of a warming brew will remain undimmed.

Self-employed builder Eric Desmond added that even when he has got missed calls or messages on his phone, the number one priority in the morning is to get a cup of tea on the table.

Desmond continued that modern gadgets can wait, but the kettle is crucial to starting off the day on the right foot.
