Hyderabad, September 21: Elections to civic bodies have been put off. As the term of the present councils will expire by the end of this month, special officers would take over the administration.
The cabinet which met under the chiarmanship of chief minister K Rosaiah took a decision to this effect. The reasons given for deferring election is delay in determination of reservations for women and backward classes.
But, according to sources, the state government is not keen on holding the elections to the civic bodies in the near future in view of Telangana- Andhra divide. There is a possibilty of taking a decision on when to hold the elections only after Srikrishna Committee gives its verdict and after tempers cool down.
But the state government was quick in proposing amendment to MCH Act, 1955, to ensure that regardless of how wealthy a person belonging to Backward Classes is, he could contest for seats reserved for BCs in GHMC elections. Earlier a creamy layer was fixed but the amendment proposed would lift the clause so that all BCs could contest for seats reserved for them.
As the Assembly is not in session, the cabinet proposed to issue an ordinance and later intrdouce a bill in the Assembly for making the amendment to the Act.
