Election reforms need of the hour: Intellectuals

Former chief justice of Allahabad High Court Ambati Lakshmana Rao has appealed to the youth and women to join politics and bring about electoral reforms.

Justice Lakshmana Rao was speaking at the seminar on ‘Fate of State on Cast of vote—Role of Intellectuals in present political Crisis’ here on Thursday. He stressed the need to strengthen autonomous institutions like Election Commission of India, CAG and Vigilance Commission. He bemoaned that moral values were deteriorating in present politics in the State. Stating that democracy has successfully functioned so far due to moral values in the society, he criticized the political leaders for working for personal gains instead of serving the people. He urged the NGOs to create awareness on democracy and vote value among the people.

Former director of NIMS Dr Kakarla Subba Rao called upon the intellectuals to come forward on a single platform to create awareness on the politics among the people. He lamented that people were ignoring the political, social and political issues. Stating that the Chinese government allotted lands for industries on lease basis, he said the Centre and State governments have taken lands from farmers forcibly and allotted to industries.

Former vice-chancellor Prof. C.V. Raghavulu said that the universities have failed to produce quality leaders in the country. He alleged that the political leaders misled the people by introducing various subsidized schemes. He urged the political parties to fight against corruption in the country.

Environment expert Dr Babu Rao has stressed the need for introducing reforms in the election system. He criticized the political leaders for entering election fray to make illegal money and protect it. He also demanded that the Centre give up “anti-people” policies.

Irrigation specialist Cherukuri Veeraiah also spoke. (NSS)
