Election Commissioner Sunil Arora on Monday arrived in Kashmir’s valley to assess the ground situation in the state for holding the Lok Sabha and assembly polls together.
He will meet several political parties to discuss the current atmosphere to conduct the election in the Valley and also to ensure that upcoming elections are held in Kashmir valley on proper time.
In November 2018, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satya Pal Malik dissolved the assembly after Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti staked claim to form a government in the state with support from her arch rival Omar Abdullah’s National Conference (NC) and the Congress.
As per a Supreme Court ruling, the outer limit for holding fresh polls after the dissolution of a House is six months and in case of J&K, this deadline ends in May 2019.
The state has been under the President’s Rule since December 20, 2018.
