Elder abuse doubles

The report released by HelpAge India, on the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day revealed that elder abuse has doubled compared to last year. About 50 per cent of the elderly surveyed across 12 cities in the country admit to having experienced abuse. In a similar survey last year, only 23 per cent of the respondents had said they faced abuse.

The survey was conducted on 1200 people over sixty years of age both man and women. The top perpetrators of abuse are the daughter-in-law (61%) and son (59%).

Elder abuse is a universal problem encountered in many countries World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed on June 15.
