Eight killed after rains lash parts of Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, May 23: Eight persons, including two minors, have been killed and at least seven injured in separate incidents related to rains and dust storms in Ghaziabad and Barabanki districts of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Sunday.

Amit (9) died in a wall collapse at Devkalia village, while Reema (14) was killed when thatched roof of her house at Sewara village gave in after heavy rains and strong wind swept Barabanki last evening.

In Chauri village of the district, Gulaba (60) died when a tree fell on her during dust storm, while in another incident 40-year-old Radhey Shyam was killed in Kotwali area, police said.

The district administration has announced a financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each to kin of those killed in dust storm and rain related incidents.

In Ghaziabad’s Simbhawali, three members of a family – a woman, her husband and son – were killed when they accidentally touched a live wire snapped during dust storm in the region last night. Simranjeet Kaur (45), her husband Jagtar Singh (50), and son Surendra pal Singh died on spot, officials said.

The second mishap took place in Modinagar area where Sarbati (75) died in a wall collapse, they said.

In Hindon Vihar, seven persons were injured when the wall collapsed on them.

The MeT department said rains and dust storms were also experienced in Bagpat, Meerut, Agra, Banda, Gorakhpur, Nazibabad, Badaun, Aonla, Deoband, Saharanpur and Sambhal.

The recent change in weather also brought down mercury appreciably during the day and weathermen have predicted that more rains and thundershowers are likely to occur at many places in west UP and at a few places in eastern part of the state.
