Eight fishermen injured in attack

Nagapattinam(TN), March 05: Eight fishermen were injured in Tarangambadi in the district after they were attacked by a group over differences in distribution of boat engines at subsidised rates under a government scheme, police said today.

According to police one Mahibalan, in charge of distributing the engines, refused to allot an engine to a person, following which he lodged a complaint with the fishermen’s panchayat.

Though Mahibalan was summoned by the panchayat four days back, he did not turn up on the specified date, following which it was decided to conduct the enquiry on some other day.

Police said a seven member gang yesterday attacked six persons, believed to be Mahibalan’s supporters at Tarangambadi market and also ransacked some houses.

All the injured have been hospitalised and their condition is stated to be stable.
