Egypt’s MB not negotiating with Mubarak

Cairo, February 07: The Muslim Brotherhood — Egypt’s main opposition group — says it is not negotiating with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s regime but is only conveying the opposition’s demand to the embattled president.

“We are not negotiating. We give them the demand for the revolution. I emphasize the demand. And on top of the demand, nothing will be carried out unless Mubarak leaves power and departs,” representative of Muslim Brotherhood Mohammad Ghanem told Press TV on Monday.

Egyptian opposition groups have called on beleaguered Mubarak to resign immediately, saying the government should meet protesters’ demands.

The demand follows negotiations between the opponents of Mubarak’s regime and Vice President Omar Suleiman to resolve the current standoff in the crisis-hit country.

The Muslim Brotherhood has rejected the regime’s proposed reform plans, saying that Cairo has failed to respond to many demands.

The core demand of opposition parties both before and after the negotiations has been Mubarak’s resignation. However, Egypt’s incumbent president has said he would remain in power until the next presidential election scheduled to be held in September.

Millions of Egyptians took to the streets on Monday in protest to Mubarak’s regime on the 14th day of the nationwide demonstrations.

According to the United Nations, at least 300 people have so far been killed and thousands more injured during the protests in the North African country.
