Cairo, May 09: Over 5,000 representatives of social and political groups across Egypt have gathered in the country’s largest political confab with the aim of protecting their recent popular revolution.
The one-day conference titled “Egypt’s First Conference: The People Protect the Revolution,” was held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, in order to protect the demands of the Egyptian nation, a Media correspondent reported on Sunday.
“It’s impossible for the revolution to stay on the right track unless there is a national dialogue,” Nasser Abdel Hamid of Egypt’s Youth Coalition said.
The day was divided into four discussion sessions during which the principles of the constitution, the economy and social equality as well as upcoming elections and national council were conferred.
Some of the members of the Muslim Brotherhood were also present in the event.
“The organization has chosen to participate in the national dialogue. It has also sent representatives to this gathering,” Mohamed el-Kassas from Muslim Brotherhood said.
The conference is the first attempt to bring together political parties and social movements, ranging from Al-Azhar scholars to leftist activists to those who have played a key role in the revolution.
“There can be no real change in the country if Al-Azhar continues to follow the state,” Sheikh Khalid Masoud from Al-Azhar Institute said.
The participants of the gathering, comprised of workers, farmers and youth groups, agreed to form a council that will be the main voice of the revolution and the main driver in the transitional phase.
On February 11, after 18 days of massive anti-Mubarak protests, the Egyptian leader, after being in power for 30 years, finally stepped down and handed power to the military.
