Egyptian media hail Iran FM remarks

Cairo, April 01: Egyptian media outlets have hailed remarks by Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi regarding the promotion of Tehran-Cairo ties.

Media outlets in the North African country said Salehi’s remarks could enforce a step forward in diplomatic ties between Egypt and the Islamic Republic, IRNA reported on Thursday

Television and radio networks as well as news websites in Egypt have extensively covered Salehi’s remarks that were made in response to earlier comments made by his Egyptian counterpart Nabil al-Arabi on Iran ties.

In his first press conference as Egypt’s foreign minister on Tuesday, al-Arabi had said Cairo is ready to open “a new page with Iran.”

Salehi commented on al-Arabi’s remarks by saying “despite the ups and downs, historical ties between the two countries have been sustained.”

“The Egyptian people have turned a new page in the country’s history by moving towards the realization of their justice-seeking demands,” Salehi said.

Egyptian media covered Salehi’s remarks entirely, focusing more on some points, including where he stressed that good relations between the two countries could help the region’s stability, security and development.

Eighteen days of anti-government protests in Egypt resulted in the historic overthrow of the 82-year-old former President Hosni Mubarak, who handed over power to a military council on February 11.

Tehran and Cairo have not had full diplomatic relations since 1979.

Iran severed ties with Egypt after Cairo signed the 1978 Camp David Accords with Israel and provided asylum to Iran’s deposed shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
