Egypt nominates Arab League candidate

Cairo, April 12: Egypt has nominated Mostafa el-Fekki, a former member of ousted President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling party, for the post of the secretary general of the Arab League.

In a statement released on Monday, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil al-Arabi declared he is confident that “Fekki has enough competence to fill the league’s top post.”

If elected by the Arab League member states, Fekki will replace the outgoing secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, also an Egyptian.

The Arab League is scheduled to choose its new secretary general in May, but Moussa has said he will not re-run for the prestigious post to take part in Egypt’s presidential election.

Fekki served as information assistant to Mubarak from 1985 to 1992. A former member of the National Democratic Party, he resigned from the party following Egypt’s revolution that forced Mubarak to step down back in February.
