Cairo, February 12:Egypt is of high importance for the US and the Zionist Regime [of Israel], because Egypt is considered the gateway to Palestine’s freedom,” Jalili said on Saturday.
“Given the strategic approach of the West and the US toward [the issue of] providing security for the Zionist regime and its survival in the region, they will use complicated plots against the Egyptian people,” IRNA quoted Jalili as saying.
On Friday, after 18 days of massive anti-Mubarak protests across Egypt, newly appointed Vice President Omar Suleiman announced Mubarak’s decision to step down and transfer power to the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces.
This is while millions of Egyptians have called for the establishment of a democratic government.
The transition means that Egypt, which has been under a state of emergency for the past 30 years, will continue to be ruled by the military.
The Iranian lawmaker urged Egyptians to be vigilant and said it was possible that Western powers would prevent fundamental change from taking place in the Egyptian government.
In this case once again elements with ties to the West and Israel will seize power in Egypt, Jalali added.
The main Egyptian opposition party, the Muslim Brotherhood, has called on the military to swiftly hand over power to a civilian-led government.
The Muslim Brotherhood has also called for the establishment of a constitution that “guarantees freedom and human Rights.”
