Economic offences on the rise: Dinesh Reddy

Hyderabad, December 30: The year has seen rise in white collar offences and crime against women while the left wing extremism has shown a decline in the State which also has seen drugs and fraud cases keeping the police on its toes, not to say the agitations.

The economic offences, number wise have increased marginally but the amount involved in white collar crime rose to Rs 2.850 crore as against Rs 1,404 previous year. This was mainly due to the new Micro Finance Institution (MFI) Regulation Act.

The major breakthrough police had was in Speak Asia, Krushi BankSBH Jainoor Branch, Embezzlement of Government funds and HIM cases, DGP V Dinesh Reddy told reporters here today.

Dowry deaths went up from 528 to 570 and rape cases spiralled from 1290 to 1308 while crime against women on the whole declined with harassment, bigamy and other offences sliding.

Left wing extremism was under check and the crime declined by 51 per cent as compared to previous year. Police arrested 149 extremists while 198 surrendered and nine encounters were reported during the year in which four extremists were killed.
On the whole crime rate came down by 5.66 per cent as compared to the previous year.

Road accidents and Cheating cases have declined while there was a marginal increase in other cognizable crime, according to the date released by the Police department.
Drug peddling has opened a new leaf in the police book and 17 drug rackets were busted during the year with peddlers from Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania being arrested. The number of cases increased from 357 to 309.

The number of acid attack cases went up from 6 to 9 this year while dowry deaths went up from 528 to 570 and rape cases increased from 1290 to 1308, the data revealed. Kidnap cases fell from 1541 to 1514 while murder cases scaled up from 2,267 to 2,522 while riots increased marginally and thefts went up by 1,500 at 32,527 and crime against women swelled from 20,187 to 22,034.

The DGP said 61,113 cases were under investigation across 1,661 police stations and all measures are being taken to expedite the investigation.

A proposal to set up 15 more Marine Police stations along the coastal plain was sent to the Centre. During the year, 50 Sri Lankan fishermen were arrested and 10 boats seized and eight cases were registered during the year, he said.

In all 1.64 lakh cases were reported this year (till November) against the previous year figure of 1,55 lakh cases.
