EC prepared to switch to ballot paper method: CEO

Hyderabad, July 11: The Election Commission will not face any great difficulty in switching over to ballot papers from the recently introduced and currently used method of voting through Electronic Voting Machines.

Talking to media person on Saturday, Chief Electoral Officer IV Subba Rao said that the EC has no problems in using ballot papers for 11 of the 12 Assembly constituencies for the forthcoming by-elections.

He said that the EC had opted for the EVMs because they were faster and more accurate than the ballot paper method. He said that the large number of nominations filed for 11 constituencies had forced the EC to decide on using the ballot paper method of voting.

Dr Subba Rao revealed that the EVMs are designed in such a way that they can be used if less than 64 candidates contest in a single constituency. If the number of candidates is more than 64, then the EC will have to revert back to the ballot paper method.

The CEO also maintained that the EC had taken care to remove and doubts in the minds of political party leaders over the EVMs.

Dr Subba Rao said that the EC is taking all the necessary steps to use ballot papers in the by-polls. He added that a final decision will be taken after the scrutiny of nominations is concluded.
