EC notice to Sakshi Maharaj over comments on Muslim population

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday serve to BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj for his “objectionable” speech on Muslim population.

The controversial BJP leader on January 7 while addressing a gathering in Meerut ahead of the crucial polls in Uttar Pradesh the called for implementing the Uniform Civil Code and indirectly blamed the Muslim community responsible for the population explosion.

“Population is rising rapidly, and so are the country’s problems. But Hindus are not responsible for this. Those who talk about four wives and 40 children are responsible,” he said.

“Hindu ghata toh desh bata (Remember, if Hindus number decreases, the country will be divided),” said the MP.

“I said four wives and 40 children will not be allowed, cannot be allowed. Mothers are not machines,” he said.

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday sought a report on communal remarks allegedly made by BJP MP from Unnao. Besides, an FIR was lodged for his remark on population control.

The Unnao MP on EC notice to him said that he do not mean to hurt sentiments of any community.
