EC asks parties to suggest paper backup in EVMs

New Delhi, October 18: The Election Commission has asked political parties to send suggestions for exploring the possibility of having paper backup in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), a demand made by some of them to enhance people’s confidence.

In a letter to recognised national and state political parties, the EC also asked them to depute technical experts for interaction with Commission’s Technical Expert Committee which is exploring the possibility of incorporating ‘Voter Verifiable Paper Trail’ in the machines.

The EC had earlier decided to refer to the Technical Expert Committee, headed by P V Indiresan, former Director of IIT, Madras, for detailed examination of ‘voter verifiable paper trail’ in EVMs in all its aspects and submit its report to the EC for consideration.
