New delhi,January 14 :THE Mango hasn’t received its share of limelight for its health benefits, so far. While other super foods such as blueberries, acai and pomegranate are known for their high anti- oxidant content, the luscious mango hasn’t made it to the list , until now.
A new study done at the Texas Agrilife Research Institute has found that consuming mangoes can prevent the proliferation of certain colon and breast cancer cells.
While it has low anti- oxidant capacity as compared to other super foods, the potent anti- cancer activity of mangoes more than makes up for the deficit.
Researchers tested polyphenol found in mango extracts on colon, breast, lung, leukemia and prostate cancers.
While this had a marginal impact on lung, leukaemia and prostate cancers, maximum effect was observed on the breast and colon cancers.
“ We found that not all cell lines are sensitive to the same degree to an anti- cancer agent. But the cells responsible for breast and colon cancer underwent death. Mango polyphenolics are effective on cells that may be on the verge of mutating or being damaged by preventing this kind of damage,” said the researchers.
Mangoes also contain pectin, a soluble dietary fibre, which inhibits a protein that plays a role at all stages of cancer progression.
An Indian study conducted at the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram also proved the protective effect of eating mango on gallbladder cancer.
Interestingly, traditional systems of medicine such as Unani and Ayurveda have always recommended mango for the prevention of cancer.
“ In ayurveda, we believe that increased vata leads to abnormal cell division, resulting in cancer. Mango has been recommended in Charak Samhita as the fruit which controls vata and hence prevents cancer. It is also suggested for all kinds of degenerative disorders,” said Dr Ramnivas Parasher of Vedanta Ayurveda.
Dr Geetika Ahluwalia, chief dietician at the Delhi Heart and Lung Institute, said mangoes have never been given due credit.
“ Most people think eating mangoes leads to weight gain because of its high calorific value.
But having one mango a day is good for you because it is full of vitamins, minerals and iron,” she added.
