Early election in Telangana: Will it be suicidal for TRS?

Hyderabad: Early election will be an alarming bell for TRS. History is evident that in integrated AP, early elections were held thrice which proved to be disadvantages for the incumbent government. If TRS decides to hold elections before the completion of the term, it would tantamount to committing suicide.

In the past, early elections had brought defeat to Chandrababu Naidu, Vijay Bhasker Reddy and also Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Only Indira Gandhi met with success when she decided to hold elections a year before.

It may be noted that Chandrababu Naidu had narrowly escaped the Naxalite attack. In order to cash in on this incident, he recommended for the dissolution of State assembly in November 2003 but Election Commission held elections only in 2004. In this manner, the strategy of Mr. Naidu had met with failure. Dr. YS Rajsekhara Reddy came to power after this election.

In 1982, Congress Party CM, Mr. Vijay Bhasker Reddy sought permission from Congress High Command to hold early elections. He met with failure due to NTR wave of TDP.

In March 1990, AP Assembly had to go for elections but NTR recommended for early elections four months before the stipulated time. In these elections, TDP lost and Dr. M. Channa Reddy came to power.

In 2004, Vajpayee recommended for early elections but NDA met with defeat.

KCR is contemplating to hold elections earlier than the scheduled time. He has consulted Mr. Modi in this regard. He has also contacted the Governor of AP and Telangana, Mr. Narasimhan. The other day, KCR held a meeting of the ministers which continued for 7 hours. The authentic sources indicated that there was no consensus among his cabinet colleagues for holding early elections. The final decision has been left to KCR.

On the basis of the survey conducted, KCR is hopeful of winning 100 assembly seats but the ground reality is that TRS got 25 MLAs inducted into it from other parties. In those constituencies, TDP cadre has not yet accepted the MLAs of other parties. In constituencies reserved for SCs, STs the position of TRS is weak.

In 24 Assembly constituencies of Greater Hyderabad, the situation is not favorable for TRS.

Taking into consideration all these factors, the political analysts opine that the decision to hold elections early would tantamount to committing suicide for TRS.
