E-cigarettes, syringes, tobacco and knives found in bags of Bengaluru school students

Bengaluru: During random checks in classrooms, teachers unearth banned items which include e-cigarettes, knives tobacco, and firecrackers. Several schools management in Bengaluru has reported a rise in illegal items in school bags.

At least three schools in Bengaluru have reported cases of students carrying illegal items, in the past week alone. To address the problem, the school management along with alerting the parents induced psychologists for a counselling.

The items were found among higher primary and high school students from Classes V to X. Students have been found carrying at least ₹1,000 in cash, which is also against the rules.

According to the report published in The Hindu, the secretary of the New Blossoms Education Society D. Shashi Kumar said that electronic cigarettes were found in a student’s school bag on Tuesday.

He stated that “We have ten minutes every day in one period dedicated to checking school bags. We first encourage the child to own up and surrender items that are not allowed. Later, their bench-mates check the bag as the teacher supervises.”

In a similar case, Natesh Kumar, Vice Principal, Gurukula International School, during a random bag check on Thursday found e-cigarettes, firecrackers and mobile phones, and sharp objects such as blades, screwdrivers and syringes.

Mr Kumar further stated that “Both parents and school managements need to be proactive to avoid this bringing of banned items as students tend to pick up smoking, chewing tobacco, and drinking owing to peer pressure.”
