Hamburg, January 24: E-cigarettes are considered as a healthy alternative to real cigarettes as their users can inhale nicotine without tar, tobacco or carbon monoxide. However, not enough studies support this hypothesis.
FDA officials are concerned about different amounts of nicotine vapor inhaled with each puff in different brands of the battery-operated device. They also believe the smoking alternative contains powerful cancer-causing chemicals.
According to the study published in the British Medical Journal, there is no evidence of chemical contamination of e-cigarettes in the three main studies performed in this regard.
“The scarce evidence indicates the existence of various toxic and carcinogenic compounds in e-cigarettes, albeit in possibly much smaller concentrations than in traditional cigarettes,” scientists reported.
They, therefore, concluded that more studies are needed in this field in order to assess the short- and long-term effects of e-cigarette use, stressing, “Alternative smoking strategies aimed at reducing the threat to public health caused by the tobacco epidemic are always welcome.”
