Hyderabad, August 26: “No doubt modern technology has made it easy for the people to convey their thoughts yet it has closed down earnings of people like us” this is the complaint made by 40 year old Mohammad Taher who sells Eid card every year during Ramadan by setting up a stall in the foot of Charminar.
Even as the third ashra of Holy Ramadan is coming to its close, these eid cards have just remained a thing of display, that too limited to only a few book shops and some gift shops, since the business of traditional Eid cards has been eclipsed by the advent of E-cards culture and increasing use of mobile phone’s SMS service.
Printing press owners on one side say that now eid cards are printed only on the orders given by government and corporate institutions, on the other hand an official of the GPO Abids has a similar story to tell, he says that the trend of sending Eid cards have come down to a considerable extent.
A few youth present near the book shops at Charminar and Gulzarhouz said that they send Eid greetings to their friends and near and dear ones through E-mail, E-cards or mobile SMS. They felt that it is easy to wish Eid greetings during mobile phone talk on the ‘chand raat’ the night before Eid when the moon is sighted. Apart from that uncountable readymade cards are available on internet the cost of sending them is also near to nothing compared to the traditional cards.
Eid card sellers have to say that because of internet and especially the use of mobile phones their business has suffered a huge loss.
