DU teachers, students protest proposed semester system

New Delhi, March 25: It was a poetic protest at the Delhi University where hundreds of teachers were joined by students in singing revolutionary songs of Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Majaaz to demonstrate against what they called the imposition of the semester system in a dictatorial way.

The group of over 400 teachers meeting as a ‘Joint Action Body’, along with students from several departments, held a candle light vigil to protest the “semesterisation” of the undergraduate courses in the University.

The teachers termed the decision of the University as “an obsession with a label”, “a disaster”, “balkanisation” and “privatisation” of education.

“We have been raising serious concerns but none is being answered. No framework has been worked out and no policies set for the system,” Professor Saumyajit Bhattacharya from the Economics department of Kirori Mal College said.
