Pune, March 07: A drunk youth drove his Honda City car over a poor senior citizen sleeping on the roundabout of the Kamgar Putla Chowk near Shivajinagar early on Sunday. The victim died on the spot.
Anand (24), son of a city trader, Ramvilas Verma, was arrested. He was produced before the court on Sunday and granted bail.
Anand was allegedly in an inebriated condition while driving the vehicle (MH 12 ET 131). The car ran over Ambadas Laxman Shinde (60) and dragged him for 15 feet. It hit a parked car before halting.
The Shivajinagar police arrested Anand under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. The police also seized the vehicle.
Verma is a resident of Shimpi Aali in Hadapsar.
After the incident, the slum dwellers raised a hue and cry and informed the police. Sub inspector YA Shaikh of Shivajinagar police station said Anand, a commerce graduate, had gone to attend a function at a three-star hotel.
“He was heading home from Sancheti Hospital side at 3 am when the incident took place. There was another occupant in the car, who was also drunk,” Shaikh added.
The police said Shinde was asleep on the roundabout. “Shinde was dragged for 15 feet and died on the spot due to multiple injuries,” the police added. Shaikh said Verma was sent for a medical test, which proved that he was driving in an inebriated state.
