Mexico, December 17: One of Mexico’s most wanted drug traffickers Arturo Beltran Leyva was killed in a shootout with state security forces, officials said.
“We confirm the death of Arturo Beltran Leyva. He was killed in a navy operation in Cuernavaca,” a navy captain in Mexico City told Reuters today.
Milenio TV says four other suspects died in the firefight in the southern city of Cuernavaca.
Navy forces have become increasingly involved in Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s fight against drug gangs, which has been ongoing since December 2006.
Earlier the severed heads of six state police investigators were found in a public plaza in the northern Mexico state of Durango.
